How I design and run workshops that tackle any challenge
3 tips for effective workshop design and facilitation
When I receive a request for designing a workshop, I always make it clear that we have to solve only one challenge at a time! No two challenges are the same!
As an external workshop designer, I've had the opportunity to work with a wide range of teams and organizations, each with their own unique set of challenges and goals. One of the biggest challenges I've faced is figuring out how to design and run workshops that effectively tackle diverse requests, problems, and challenges.
But after years of learning and adapting, I've discovered a few key principles that have helped me design and run workshops tailored to the specific needs of each team I work with.
1. Understand the end goal
First and foremost, it's crucial to understand the specific challenge or goal that the workshop is meant to address. This might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised at how many workshops or even meetings are run without a clear understanding of what the team is trying to accomplish.
2. Involve the team in the design process
Once you have a clear understanding of the challenge or goal, it's important to involve the team in the workshop design process as much as possible. This will help ensure that the workshop is tailored to their specific needs and also helps build buy-in and engagement from the team.
S.O.S.: However, be careful! Don't say too much; just listen actively, align with their expectations, and then start designing.

3. Collaboration and participation
Another key principle is to focus on collaboration and participation. A good workshop should be designed to encourage active participation and collaboration among the team members. This might include activities that encourage problem-solving, brainstorming, or other forms of active participation.
4. Excellent facilitation
Finally, it's important to make sure that the workshop is well-facilitated. This means having a facilitator who is skilled in running workshops and can create an environment that is conducive to learning and collaboration.
By following the above principles, I've been able to design and run workshops that effectively tackle a wide range of challenges. And I'm confident that they can help you do the same.
So next time you're faced with a challenging workshop, remember to:
✅ Understand the challenge or goal
✅ Involve the team in the design process
✅ Focus on collaboration and participation
✅ Have a facilitator who can create a good environment for learning and collaboration
